I loved being the principal at Trunnell Elementary. It was endlessly hard work, but the wonderful memories are everlasting. Here I am with one of my Safety Patrol groups.

Christmas in Hopkinsville
I can remember a particular Christmas at my grandparents'. Granddaddy had the fireplace in the front bedroom lit. Santa left his gifts by the hearth. Every toy Santa left was made by either Elf Granddaddy or Elf Grandmother. It's a magical memory.

I lived in Blanding III my freshman year. I moved into the sorority house the next year. I stayed busy: President of Alpha Xi Delta sorority, President of Association Women Students, Sweetheart of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity, and Chair of the Little Kentucky Derby.

My First Book
I wrote a story for Amy's first Christmas. In this tale, Leslie has a dream that she can have anything she wants in Santa Land. She quickly realizes that it isn't any fun without Amy.

Outstanding PTA President
Janet Vautard wins my Outstanding PTA President Award. She was in the PTA office everyday organizing, mediating, telephoning, bargaining, and keeping peace. She never got upset. She just kept working for the children!
Academic Patches project
Trunnell's PTA helped fund this project. The parents loved it. Students were recognized after each report card for accomplishments made during the report card period.
Best Secretary EVER!
Anita Atwell was PTA President for two years. Later I hired her for school secretary. Now she runs her own Huntington Learning Center.
Celebrate 15 years as principal!
Trunnell's PTA threw a big bash at the Kentucky Derby Museum.

I love history. I read history books, historical fiction, and research genealogy for fun. My favorite topic is the Clark family (specifically George Rogers & his brother, William).

My Workshop
Giving a PHOTO GENEALOGY blog to family members as a Christmas gift . . .
. . . presented me with a problem. How do you wrap an internet site and put it under the tree? I decided to make a small book for each family member with the web addresses and photos on each page. I used brown paper lunch bags, folded them in half and tied them with a little black bow. CLICK
Instead of using Christmas wrap . . .
. . . I selected a specific photo for each recipient. I placed the photo on another brown paper lunch bag, placed the booklet in the bag, and tied it with a piece of simple red string. I used stickers to put each recipient's name of their bag. CLICK

Santa always brought something homemade.
I made a grocery store & a doll house out of card board boxes for Leslie & Amy. I made doll quilts & teddy bear dresses other years. I wrote & self published a book ("Leslie's Christmas Dream") for the girls.
Playing in Giles Market
Any child that came to our house to play went straight for Giles Market. It was very popular.
I made the doll quilts in Santa's Workshop.

When Great Grandmother Bess Hopson Wolfe became too old to go places, Leslie & Amy would entertain her. The show varied. Sometimes it was 'knock knock' jokes. As a teacher . . .
I took students camping, rafting, & rappelling. This group is collecting water samples to study under a microscope.

This was absolutely the best group of teaching peers a gal could have!
Portland Museum

Gheens Academy
I left Byck in '87 and promoted to central office. I led teacher inservice sessions, oversaw the creation of six magnet programs, and learned much from career driven personalities.
Three Years at Gheens Academy, Central Office
I helped design & create two different magnet programs for Jefferson County Public Schools. The Math Magnets were Shelby, Englehard, and Breckinridge Elementary Schools. The Performing Art Magnets were Sanders, Cochrane, and King Elementary Schools.

I organized an Open House to showcase the math program. Board members and the news media came.

I became a principal in 1990.
'Old Time Radio Show'
When I was the principal at Trunnell Elementary, I wrote the skits, collected the music, and produced this 'Old Time Radio Show'. John Gage was our MC. John & Shelly Corder taught the childrren the music. Our show included sound effects, just like old time radio. KET came out and did a cover story on this project, we were broadcast on NPR and we got a nice write up in the Louisville Courier-Journal. (clip image to hear the entire show)

Community Scholars
This was a program I created for Trunnell's gifted & talented students. We produced Shakespeare productions; an old time radio show for NPR; held a mock trial for Hanzel & Gretel; researched the community's history; learned how to use the Archives Library at the University of Louisville; plus studied chemistry and algebra.
Teacher Workrooms
I created a workroom for the teachers on each floor.
